Chapter Thirteen

Deep down, Ezra knew he would regret dragging Emilie to the gala. It wasn’t that he wanted to show her off or brag about finally having a beautiful, down-to-earth date for that type of event—though that was definitely nice to enjoy for once. The reason he’d put so much effort into convincing her to go was because he wanted to prove to her that, even though he had a so-called glamorous lifestyle, he was still the same normal, humble guy that she’d met in London.

He didn’t blame Emily for having a bias against wealthy people. Even he didn’t like most of them. But he wanted her to be a part of his life, so it was important for her to see that he wasn’t fake or shallow or ridiculous like so many others they met that evening.

He wasn’t sure it had worked.

Ezra thought they were having a good time. Emilie was fending off prying questions with charm and grace. She was dazzling, drawing attention with her beauty. He remembered how gorgeous she’d looked in red at Pierre and Lena’s was wedding, so there was no question he was going to get her a red dress to wear.

Was that the problem? Did she not like his dressing her up? It wasn’t as if he had forced her to wear it—she was the one who claimed she didn’t have anything to wear.

The gala was going so well that Emilie was finally interested in coming over to his place. He was convinced that, once they made it to Soho and he could make love to her again, she would be his once and for all. Perhaps it was childish, but Ezra was a romantic man. The intimate moment they’d shared on the balcony outside the ballroom had been hot and passionate.

Something must have happened the second he left her side. He regretted it. Who knew what Emilie had dealt with while she was on her own at the gala? Did someone make a rude comment?

Ezra wanted to believe Emilie was telling the truth when she changed her mind and claimed to be suffering from a migraine. Of course he did. He wasn’t a paranoid man, and it wasn’t as if he thought Emilie owed it to him to come over just because she said she wanted to in the heat of the moment. But something told him she was making an excuse to get out of spending the night with him. An excuse that wouldn’t hurt his feelings, but also wouldn’t be questioned.

Ezra let it slide. Whatever changed Emilie’s mind was only his business if she chose to share it with him.

The next morning, he texted her to check in on how she was feeling. He offered to come over with medicine and to cook her a proper meal, but she replied with short, clipped sentences about how she appreciated the offer, but was fine.

When Monday rolled around, Ezra knew something wasn’t right. She was at work, toiling away with the design team on the twenty-third floor, but she continued to dodge his text messages.
